Kirstin, piano teacher in Cape Town

Meet your teacher

Hi! My name is Kirstin and I've been teaching adult students for many years now. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music from Stellenbosch University in 2016 and began my own studio in 2017. I've been playing piano for over 2 decades and still love it. I hope that you will quickly love the instrument too. I truly believe anyone can learn to play the piano given the right learning environment. I love teaching adults because of their enthusiasm to learn, and it is so rewarding to see dreams come to life. I create a nurturing and encouraging environment in my studio: life got in the way of practicing? That's perfectly okay! I always adjust lessons to your individual needs. My studio is based in Century City, Cape Town. I can't wait to welcome you there!

From my students:

“Starting to play the piano again in my 50’s was something I always wanted to do. Kirstin made me feel at ease. She was incredibly patient, never rushed me and always encouraged me to believe in myself. Every lesson was enjoyable because she made it interesting. She celebrated my progress and gently guided me through the more challenging moments. She always knew when I hadn’t practiced!! 🤔 Thank you Kirstin for your dedication, support and enthusiasm, making my piano journey a memorable experience. ”

Linda, 58

“Kirstin taught me valuable skills that gave me a good foundation for playing piano. She taught me everything from the correct posture and playing technique, to sight-reading. I would absolutely recommend her for piano lessons.”

Kaamraan, 33

“Kirstin is a knowledgeable piano educator and innovative in her approach. As an adult beginner, I was very eager but did not know what to expect. Kirstin’s patience and kindness, coupled with structured lesson plans, made learning fun whilst achieving set goals as planned. Highly recommended.”

Carin, 24

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too late to learn piano as an adult?

No! Adults can absolutely learn to play piano, and can even progress faster than younger players. Motivation matters more than age.

Do I need to already know how to read music to start lessons?

Not at all. I take a very wholistic approach to teaching, meaning you will learn everything you need to know, including music reading, from your very first lesson.

How long does it take to learn piano as a beginner?

Most adult beginners can play simple songs within a few weeks and feel confident with basic pieces within 3-6 months, depending on practice consistency.

Do I need my own piano or keyboard to take lessons?

Having your own piano or keyboard is highly recommended to make the most progress. A keyboard with weighted or semi-weighted keys is enough to start. If you currently don't have a piano, please do get in touch and I will guide you in finding something quality that fits your budget.
